The Veteran
A “Veteran” lion has many distinct features. Muscle tone declines with age so veteran lions may appear smaller than younger males. The hair on their muzzle begins to thin by about 7 years of age and becomes progressively “pock-marked”. Their mane begins to look fuzzy around the 7 year mark and around 8 years of age it loses condition, may thin, hair ends split, and length shortens. These veteran lions have conspicuously yellow teeth, with all showing heavy wear. Their canines are often broken and incisors may be missing. The nose pigmentation changes with age as well:
7 yrs: ~50-85% black 8 yrs: 75-100% black 10 yrs : 100% black
